Does anyone know which species of Gryllotalpa occur in Andalusie, Spain. This evening in december there was a specimen singing from a tree in Marbella? I'm quit sure it was singing from a tree, and not from the soil.

Dear Ludy,

It seems that Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa is the only native European species of Mole Cricket within this genus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gryllotalpa

Have you considered that cicadidae species could cause loud sounds as well? They tend to live in trees and are pretty common in the mediterranean area I think.

Now I read your post again I notice that you wrote you heard it in the evening. The cicadas I've heard only sang in the full sun.  B)

Hello Julian
You're right about the time of the record. I heard the Gryllotalpa specimen singing far after sunset from 22.00 h on. I think it was singing from a shrub, although I haven't seen the animal and the shrub was standing next to a wall of a terras in the front of a house, so it might as well have been sitting against the wall. I did not look at the location. I have a record of the sound, but will upload it as internet connection will be beter in a few days when I'm back home. I was wondering how many species of Gryllotalpa live in Spain. The website you have been referring to is far incomplete about this since in Europa for sure there have been described at least 8 species (e.g. in Italy).

kind regards
