I, me and myself - we don't  :-/

Or, to say the least, we are still indet. concerning this decision...  :P

In my opinion:

spec. is for genera
indet. is for higher taxon levels.

I don't know where these basic rules hail from. But I am very sure this is the proper way. (check out any scientific paper).
Also note that species and genera names are to be written italic; higher-level taxa are not to be written italic. The abbreviations "spec." and "indet."themselves, should not be italic.

agg. and s.l. are not identical.
agg. = aggregate of species, such as problem species groups which cannot be identified to species level as larva but only as can be id'd to species level as adult, like some Chironomidae;
s.l. is sensu lato, in the wide sense (as opposed to s.s. sensu stricto). That typically applies for species which have been split up: if you want to stress that you found a specimen of a species which has been split up, and you are sure it's not on of the newly described species which originally was not split up, you may want to use [species] s.s.; if you are talking about specimens before the split, use s.l. (just check Wikipedia on this https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sensu_lato)

In short, we should retain both agg., and s.l. We could also retain 'complex' , but that's generally not liked any longer. We better avoid that (there is no added value retaining 'comlex'.

David

I do still see complex used quite often in papers regarding mammals.

Just for the record, I'm basically with David on this :)

But, I would much prefer "sp." as opposed to "spec." and I don't have a huge problem with the "sp." being italic for reasons of technical simplicity. It would be nice however if taxon names above genus could drop the italics ;)

On "complex" and "group" I'm not too sure. Complex is imho mostly interchangeable with "agg." but a species group can be slightly wider than "s.l." I think and for foto ID a "species group" might be the best obtainable, so we might need group and s.l. both.

All that said: I really shouldn't be talking as my gut feeling (*cough*experience*cough*) with these issues is very much restricted to entomology (s.l.) and from experience in some other discussions we have had (on the term "synonym" for example) it is clear that the different disciplines for higher level taxonomic groups all have their own "culture" of prefered terminology.

So maybe we should take that into account, and have an open mind to different sets of abbreviations for the different disciplines

Arabidopsis lyrata subsp. petraea

Euleia rotundiventris = http://observado.org/soort/info/156558
Cryptaciura rotundiventris = http://observado.org/soort/info/85745

CiteerDear Pieter,

I'd like to change the entry in the FaEu (for which I am the only active author now), but its current interface is very unfriendly, so it is out-of-time. Bernhard Merz (who was the senior author of the first version) in 2003-2004 followed my splitted classification, but I myself prefer now to use Euleia only in its widest sense, following Norrbom et al. 1999.

I therefore have all the rights to advise following the lumped classification (Euleia rotundiventris).

I and me agree with Hisko ;-)
I come across 'indet' in the Naturalis collection, for collected insects that are not determined to species level and species level is the only real determination level for biologists. But here on observado we are dealing with something different: we try to make a determination as good as possible with pictures. Than 'order spec.' or 'family spec' is fully comparable to 'genus spec', namely a species belonging to that taxon. In the museum 'indet' means that there is work to do, but here we have made a determination indeed, although not to species level. Often there is nothing left to do, because a better determination isn't possible with a particular picture. So keep 'indet' for specialists in scientific literature and collections, but use 'spec.' everywhere for amateurs.
