The majority of these pictures show animals that look like emperor geese, but with most of them there´s something going on. I wonder if you´ll know the possible crosses? Please put a link to a specific photo in your posting.

-----------------

black bill and grey spot on the side nape, it could also still be a genuine first year emperor goose.

These 2 are indeed Barheaded x Emperor goose (Anser indicus x canagicus) for me....

see this thread for my reasoning:

same points apply here....

That would then also apply for this one:

But why are you so sure about emperor goose as other parent? Is it because of the dark spots on the undertailfeathers?

among other things yes... but there are more things:

i took the liberty to look in the web and in some  photos sent to me ....

that is what I found:  these are in my opinion bar-head x emperor- note that another feature is the bill seems to have a pale pinkish fleashy color while legs are bright orange... white area on the head is like if you put Emperor head pattern over barheaded head pattern- white area goes doen the nape/hindneck and white stripes at the sides of the neck...

And these I consider Anser indicus x caerulescens:

Is this a pure emperor goose? If it is, it will probably be a first year. I don´t know how long the bill remains black in this species?

---------------------------------

I´d agree: This one is an Emperor goose (Anser canagicus), no sign of hybridisation...

Young birds can have a darker bill and the amount of pink on the bill in general seems to vary between individuals.

and this one? I'm tempted to say it is a real one. Pink bill (although somewhat big), and breastpatterns seem okay.

Oh no it isn't:

Laatvlieger,

Aren´t both odf the newly added pictures the same bird?

I think both pictures show again Emperor  x Barheaded goose (canagicus x indicus)...

Too pale for emperor,
the typical hybrid neck pattern wellvisible in the second pic and a hint of it to see in the first pic,
also only the Bill tip dark (That would be the most reduced amount of black I had ever seen on an emperor goose bill)

too scaly pattern for barhead,
wrong head pattern for barhead,
pink on bill ,
and dark on untertail area (good for emperor and several emperor hybrids)

I wonder if this hybrid type is fertile?

Jörn,

It is the same bird! I first saw only the first picture and wasn´t sure, but then when i noticed there were more pictures added to this sighting, things were clear to me.

It´s nice to get some grip on all these hybrids. Things are getting more clear to me and the photo overviews on www.waarneming.nl can only become better because of these discussions.

-------------------------------------------------------

Hi Wouter,

Yes, it is nice to get some system in there... especially as you have such a mass of hybrid in the Netherlands...I am always quite astonished (and worried) when I see this.

There are especially lots of different hybrid geese from the Netherländs... and lots of hybrid ducks from Switzerland....

Best regards, Jörn
