Hallo allemaal,

http://www.birdpix.nl/album_page.php?pic_id=92517
Deze vogel vond ik op birdpix. Het is geen chestnut teal lijkt mij, maar wat is het wel? Weet iemand de ouders? Er zit volgens mij vast wilde eend bloed in...

-----
This picture of a duck hybrid, found on birdpix, is not a chestnut teal, but some kind of hybrid. Anyone suggestions on the two birds that made this one? In my opinion, there must be some relation with Mallard..
groet,
Redmar

Chileense Smient x Wilde Eend was het eerste dat bij mij opkwam... Maar zit op werk, dus heb stiekem geen tijd een uitgebreide motivatie bij te pennen... Komt misschien later.

Smient X Hollandse kwaker (tam ras)
Vanwege de korte staart + lichaamslengte zou ik de Wilde eend uitsluiten.

Nice photo of a hybrid chiloe wigeon x mallard!

Thanks for showing!

Alcedo atthis

there is some variability in this hybrid combination:

This one looks a bit different:

This one more similar to the birdpix bird

But I think both atre the same hybrid combination: Chiloe Wigeon x Mallard

Both show much white on undertail coverts and rustry colored flanks which excludes hybrids with other wigeon species.

The other two wigeons (American and eurasian) produce hybrids with mallad which look actually quite similar , having the flanks vermiculated grey (often with a slight reddishbrown hue in American wigeon x Mallard).

the headpattern shows the same variation in all 3 hybrids with mallard : It can vary from a head pattern much like american wigeon to a solid green head as in mallard, in between are some varianst with one or 2 cream coloured patches on a green head.

In my experience, the tendency to have the middle tail feathers elongated is often seen in hybrids eurasian wigeon x mallard or american wigeon x mallard (wrongly suggesting pinztail genes), but rarely in hybrids Chiloe x mallard.

Bill coloration can vary in all hybrids of mallard with any species of the wigeon group and be pale yellowish-grey, pinkish or pale blueish -grey.
