"The record of a Slender-billed Curlew Numenius tenuirostris at Druridge Bay, Northumberland, on 4th–7th May 1998, was recently reviewed by BBRC and BOURC. Both committees, on split decisions, found the identification to be Not Proven and hence the record is no longer acceptable. As a result, Slender-billed Curlew has been removed from the British List. This paper gives the background to the decision and summarises the review process. The bird showed plumage and structural features that were consistent with Slender-billed Curlew. However, several aspects of the descriptions and the photographic and video evidence assessed were considered insufficiently robust to secure the identification of this critically endangered, probably now extinct, bird as a first and thus potentially only record for Britain.

I read about it earlier and didn't want to share the news until I see the photo. Later discussion with many members of Algerian birding community, which I know very well, indicated that this is a hoax and several members of the community condemned this false alert and its originator and also questioned the professionalism of the APS (the official news agency) who published the news without some truth digging.")

En nu iets uitgebreider, van dezelfde auteur:
CiteerHi all,

For this observation, as of yesterday the AEWA never received a photo of the bird (while the article claimed the AEWA already have the photo for the identification). Some members of the Algerian birding community (amateurs as well as ecologists working/studying in Algeria and abroad) commented that there was a previous unfounded rumour (not about the S-b C) from the same source. "This is a bad signal" commented another member.

The observer(s) knew the significance of the observation, as they talked prematurely about the socio-economic impact of the observation on the region (this is another bad signal commented another member who used the word 'prematurely'). They also knew the AEWA. But as far as I know, they are not professional ecologists and they are just started to be involved in wetland questions.

I don't know the observer(s), but I guess they observed what they thought to be a Slender-billed Curlew, most likely they knew the probability was low, but nevertheless published the news as if it's 100% true. We all have been there, in 2010 Abdelhak and I observed a short-billed Eurasian Curlew within a small group of typical large individuals with long bills. At the time, we thought maybe it's worth asking for the ID in birdforum and also posted the photos in the facebook page (because there was only a doubt, we didn't even publish the information on the blog, let alone contacting the National News Agency).

I wish if it was true, and I still hope that some individuals may still out there. And if there is only one good thing that this "news" have done, is that it re-sparked an interest in this species.
Groet, Vincent

Nevertheless..

"Yesterday afternoon a previously unknown breeding area was located by our current expedition.  Three search teams from this expedition, led by the Spoon-billed Sandpiper Team and staff from Heritage Expeditions, positively identified a total of eight individual birds.  This 'find' in itself is incredibly important and will contribute considerably to the conservation of the species and the experience literally brought tears of joy to many of those present.  "
