(of..

Peposa-eend.
I think it is some kind of hybrid, but for being more concrete I would like to see a more detailed photo of the duck.
Jörn
Hello Jörn,
I've enlarged the photo a bit... ...I only made 2 pictures and this was the most clear one..

Ja Jan, zet me ff voor joker.
Translation for Jörn:
Yes Jan, you are making me look like a foul. But you are right not to responde on every issue.
For whatever reason I have a weak heart for ducks (my previous life??) and females know how to quack, so I feel very comfortable on the ducks/hybrids forum.

Helen, Thanks for the translation!
Jan,
you may be right, but I have to think it over-
I don´t feel fully comfortable with that solution
-I thought a Callonetta hybrid would show a tendency to a "baikal teal head pattern"(Showing the black stripe from eye downwards), as do some other Callonetta hybrids?
also , asCallonetta is a small species:
Ted, how big was this duck?
So my thoughts are: can we savely exclude Witoogeend x an Anas species??
For example, here is a photo Common Pochard x Northern Pintail.
I think structurally it is not too far away from the mystery duck, colourwise it is different, but the more reddish colour of the mystery duck could be explained by Witoogeend as parent.
What speaks for a possible Callonetta hybrid in the mystery duck, might be the realtively big eye?
Its breast colour, head shape, eyes, length and colour of its bill.
This is a proven hybrid Calonetta leucophrys x Anas gibberifrons:

And our mystery duck:

You can recognize some of the same Calonetta elements in both hybrids.

..it had the size of a smient..
do I have it right that this duck isn't to determinate for 100% sure
(als wat kan ik hem invoeren?)
CiteerHelen, Thanks for the translation!

You may be on to something here, Jörn. The mystery duck appears to have the same bill colour as your Common Pochard x Northern Pintail as well, with the dark shade on the culmen.
I vote for Ferruginous Duck x Northern Pintail!
Ik stem voor Witoogeend x Pijlstaart!
Ted, Gerd-Jan,
I am still not sure what this duck is.
I think Jan makes also some valid points here.
At the moment the only think we can be really sure is it is a hybrid ; so I´d propose to add it as
eend spec. (hybride)
But Ted , can you also enlarge the duck from teh other photo you have if this bird- or would you send me the original files? If thats ok just send me a PM and I´ll give you my mail address via pm.
maybe there is something visible we haven´t realized before...
..this is the other (enlarged) photo..
(Jörn I've send you a pm)
Hi ted should n´t the message then be in "Postvak in"? I didn´t receive anything there?
Sorry Jörn.. ..something went wrong I think.. my sent items was also empty :o
Tried it again.. ..you have mail.. :duim:
(edit: I saw a confirmation that it was sent to your e-mailadress but it isn't in my sent items  )
seems to have worked :) - I sent an answer back to you
...still curious for what this (hybride) duck is...
let me/us know if you have any new details/information
Thanks,
However , I am still not sure what this is and will try further.
I´d suspect the beak colour would be also correct for Jan´s proposal Ringed teal x ferrugineous duck,
but why then the rust-coloured undertail coverts?
Size like wigeon- this might speak more for Aythya x Anas?!?
It is indeed an odd duck....

I think, if this is the same duck (or at least the same cross), Jans proposal could well be the correct one. see size comparison to the female Mandarin.
