This topic can be used for reporting erroneous use of the English language on the website of Observado or its forum. All erroneous use on the webite may be reported and all erroneous text in pinned information text and titles of topics. There is no need for reporting erroneous text supplied by users or in unpinned topics.

All contributions for improvements are welcome. Thank you :duim:

Please include link to relevant page.
Please note, some screens (e.g. main screen) have a cache of one day, so changed items there are visible after a day only

Homepage - Transect Monitoring:

1. Is there a reason to choose the American spelling "traveled" instead of the English "travelled"?  :right:
2. Third last paragraph: how much research do you have to make to discover a species if it is present :wrong:
how much research do you have to DO to discover IF A SPECIES is present  :right: DT: changed accordingly (this screen has a cache of one day, so the changes I made yesterday are visible only now)

There are a couple of other minor issues - do you want the text in perfect English or is "bruikbaar" okay?

This is my provisional version of the Transect Monitoring text - I would need to see the original Dutch text before I was completely happy about it.

Some small possible improvements that I've found, with varying degrees of necessity.

On the home page, under Today: xxx Number of Species -> xxx Recorded species  :right: but cached, so check tomorrow
On the "new observation (https://observation.org/obs/create)" page, under Activity: Longterm stay -> Long-term stay  :right:
Under Settings  (https://observation.org/user/settings/67487): "Minimum 5 characters, no spaces. Starting with a character" -> "Minimum 5 characters, no spaces. Starting with a letter"  :right:
Same page: "real name" (should that be changed to "name"?): "First name surname or initials surname example(s) P. Brown, David Smitd" -> First name, surname, surname with initials. For example: P. Brown, David Smith"  :-X can't change this myself will ask
Same page: "show time along my observation" -> "Display time of my observations" (or something)  :right:
Under the header "My data": "Check lists" -> "checklists"  :right:

PS. The "Help" section is under construction? I can write a first draft, if you want?

Also, it'd be better to start every sentence in the same manner. There's a dot where there isn't supposed to be one. All corrections applied: :right:

Great initiative.

To start with the description of this very board ('Observation.org'):

Citaat
Sightings in the world (outside Belgium & The Netherlands) can be introduced in Observado.org. You can use your account of waarneming.nl, waarnemingen.be

This text should be either removed or replaced by one that actually describes what this board is about.

So no problem, although I prefer observation,

This may sound a bit pedantic....

A sighting is seeing something when you are outside, a record is when you record the sighting (for instance on Waarneming). They are often used loosely as synonyms. Have a look at the text under Casual Records, particularly the last sentence -

https://www.bto.org/volunteer-surveys/birdtrack/taking-part/recording-your-sightings

I would avoid observation.

Me, probably ;D

Commentary: I certainly wouldn't use commentary here. A commentary is

a) A book of comments about another book, for instance you could write a commentary on the book of Genesis.
b) Live commentary on a football match or other event.

It wouldn't be used for a collection of comments on a sighting. Online British newspapers often have a Comments section at the end of articles where readers can leave a comment on the article (or someone else's comment). They don't have a Remarks section.

ok, corrected: i put 'Comments'.
@ Feedback: I would say that's a word which should be in use for users of the platform, rather than information which comes to a user as a comment. However, I would like to see a 'submit feedback'-button somewhere in the updated version of the platform.

Zoiets

"Observado is aware of border disputes between countries. Not all territorial claims can simultaneously be honored. Therefore differences between the legal border of a specific country and the borders in observado may occur."

Tjdens het invoeren van een vogelwaarneming:
https://observation.org/obs/create
'opvliegend' wordt vertaald als 'flushing'.
Dit is niet hetzelfde en 'flushing' is iets wat de waarnemer doet, niet de vogel.
'flushed' is in elk geval beter.

EN: This species has (recently) been split in to two or more species. The species has been changed according your reported GPS-location.

EN: The reported GPS-location of this observation seems to be erroneous due to temporarily malfunctioning of your device. Please adjust the location to a correct GPS-location.
