Hmz... apart geval inderdaad.

Hi all, I think Jan´s idea of Wintertaling x Bronskopeend is probably the best fit . The head pattern of Wintertaling x Siberische Taling shows more elements of Siberische Taling than in this hybrid from Netfugl.
The idea of Wouter concerning the throat color, as far as I understand it, would be the same explanation i would think of (result of the reddish coloration of wintertaling and the pale coloration of bronskopeend)
That no long scapulars are expressed may not be unusual. In hybrids Siberische x Wintertaling I have seen they also didnt show the long distinctly coloured feathers of SiberischeTaling.
The breast of the danish hybrid gives a slightly scaly pattern impression, also a good intermediate between bronskopeend and wintertaling.
However, there is oddly much pale coloration in the undertail area, this is at the moment tzhe only worrying point for me.

Have you got any pictures of the hybrid Baikal x Green-winged teal you just mentioned? Would love to see those - and probably more of us would.
Hi Jan,
I am sorry I do not have pictures,
but there were some pictures in the web at a Dutch or Belgian? forum- either a regional forum or a breeders forum ....
I tried to relocate them when seing this thread , but without success-maybe you know which forum this could have been?

--------------------------------
I´ve changed the title of this thread, because it will make it easier to search for the right hybrids.
Hi , I did a quick drawing and description of what the hybrids Siberische x Wintertaling looked like, as I didn´t succeed in finding the link. (Edit:This is a drawing after those i have seen and not those from the link)
O great! Although it's a hybrid (which is not that good for the species), I think it's a very pretty duck. At least as you drawed it ;)

Another link showing the danish hybrid in flight!!!
With the flying bird i start to wonder again.... that speculum doesn´t say common teal or falcated duck to me- isn´t the green area too big and wrong shape?.
If I remember correctly, the distribution of green is rather like Baikal teal or like Speckled teal?
Head pattern on the flight shots also resembles some speckled teal x common teal hybrids
Speckled teal x Common teal are quite commonly bred in France , though not legally allowed.
Another problem is that the Gillham brothers in thir books on hybrid ducks mention that the long sickle-shaped feathers of falcated teal are expressed as long , but straight feathers but with the pattern of black and white as in Falcated duck. They say it looks similar as these feathers in hybrids Falcated x Laysan duck look (They have pictures of that one).
This is a difficult duck...
Regards,
Jörn
I found this accidentally: here is a thread with a photo Baikaltaling (Siberische Taling) x Wintertaling:

Very much like those I have seen...
The odd Duck from last year seems to have reappeared.

I still think the closest I have seen so far are some later generation hybrids (not F1) Speckled Teal x Common Teal.
What a beautifull Duck.
@Jörn, I have some pictures of hybrid Geese for you. Some months ago you asked for pictures to help you drawing birds for your book. Well, I send you a message by this site. I'm not sure you got the pictures because the forum mailbox is not easy to find. Here is a link with some pictures, but they are not realy good:

Are they sure that the first bird is the same as the second and third?
First photo appears to me as a Common teal X Gadwall.
Second and third... F2 or F3 hybrids?
Hi Jan,
I do not know for sure; but think it is the same bird on all 3 pictures, as the 3 photos from this year are from the same place. And the photographer of the latter two photos mentions a tag on the birds leg; and in the 1st of the 3 new photos a similar tag as in last years bird is visible (one as it is used in France where captive bred birds are used as life decoys for duck hunting, you see especially in one of last years photos that there is an extention of the plastic with a hole in it- this is where they put the chain or band through to stop the decoy birds from escaping. So I think it is also the same as last years bird, but can´t prove it- hovewer how likely is it for 2 relatively similar looking hybrids with a similar tag to be in the same region)
I also tried to contact the photographer of the latter two photos, so thathe could describe if it is the same tag. so far no answer5, but I will inform you if i receive one.
I think teal x gadwall is unlikely, as this would have a black rear end and this bird has one close to Teal.
I attach photos of 2 french hybrids (Which generation is unknown), the upper has some similaries in the green head patch and a blackish front on the head, just above the beak, and also has a similar tag to th mystery bird , with the hole for the chain (tag is white so not well visible)
the other hybrid also has some similarities in coloration , and shows how it looks if the chain is attached (personally I do not like this hunting with life decoys)
The second French bird looks similar to this bird: http://forum.waarneming.nl/forum/index.php?showtopic=45750 (http://forum.waarneming.nl/forum/index.php?showtopic=45750)
Although that bird was lacking the yellow lines around the green area around the eye. Like you already remarked the brown uppertail feathers were remarkeble in "our" bird. It was bearing a green ring by the way... so another aviculturist that didn't look good after his birds..
Here is a coloured drawing of baikal taling x wintertaling I did after the birds i had seen years ago- I recently finished that....
