I presume You know the parents?

one is clear, the other.. ?
I see a yellowish eye, which I think excludes a lot of possibilities..
furthermore I see a greenish gloss on the tertials. All in all I would say
Anas clypeata x Netta rufina?
(slobeend x krooneend)?

Am I right?

(By the way, could you please also note the webadress where this picture comes from? Normally we always put a link with pictures that doe not come from our own site. )

Hi Wouter,

in this case the photo is mine  (was made for me by a friend with the equipment),
so not on any website.

You are right with Netta rufina as one parent, but miles of with the other.... ;)

the bird himself seems to see himself as a Netta rufina...

hmm for a shoveler I would also expect maybe a little different bill shape..

But I have no idea what the other parent could be..
On this picture I see a black "nail" on the bill. And some smudgy brown pattern on the basis of the upper mandible.. This might be good for A. platyrhynchos.. but they don´t have such a yellow eyes and also the green shine on the tertials i can´t explain..

The green sheen on the tertials is very weak and only visible in very bright sunlight.... and eyecolour of this bird is really misleading...the other parent is not an Anas species, by the way

Yes, I noticed I made a big mistake: The wing is dark, which is not the case in Anas species..

But are you sure about the identification of the other parent?

because of the pattern of the sides and the light eye, I would expect a tufted as a parent.

in tufted duck I would expect more black on the bill tip.

maybe a greater scaup, because of the sides? Just a bit like the scales of a greater scaup male (or a lesser scaup of course)

None of these, sorry,.... but you got the genus of the 2nd parent...it is indeed an Aythya

I am sure of the ID of the second parent because this bird has been around for several years together with 2 brothers from the same mixed breeding.... also it matches other hybrids of this combination in many details....

White eyed duck?

That would explain a bit the strange headshape and the black nail. Also hybrids with white eyed duck are known for changed eye color. But wouldn´t you expect then more dark colours on the sides?

I guess you mean Ferrugineous duck with that.... you have it!

This is Aythya nyroca x Netta rufina

Are you sure? I mean, have you seen the pair?

CiteerAre you sure? I mean, have you seen the pair?

I have not seen the pair myself, because I didn´t know the site then.

But other birders reported a ferrugineous duck x RCPochard hybridisation there ; and that several young were raised. Since then 3 male hybrids have seen at the same site for several years.
One is a bit closer to ferrugineous duck, one is a bit closer to RCPochard and this is the more intermediate one.
Also these 3 birds fit well with several other birds from southern germany and switzerland which are said to be the same combination.

And they clearly differ from Pochard x RCpochard hybrids, which are differently coloured, rather greyish birds, that seldom show red on the bill.

So I am fully convinced this is indeed the right ID.

Perhaps it would be easier to seperate the 2 ducks in different threads?

for the Netta peposaca x Aythya nyroca, here is a picture from the web of a more A.nyroca like hybrid:

For the other one I will have to give some details later... have to work now...

I have split the subject. Pictures of the other hybrid are now in a different topic.
