What kind of a hybrid would this one be?
Found in Italy:

CiteerMoretta tabaccata
Aythya nyroca - E' una delle anatre selvatiche più rare in Italia. E' un'anatra tuffatrice predilige i laghi aperti con le rive alberate e si riproduce nel Nord Europa. (Migratori/protetti)

I'm thinking of Aythya nyroca X Netta rufina
or maybe Aythya nyroca X Anas platyrhynchos ??

My first thought was Aythya ferina X Anas platyrhynchos, what do others think of this duck?

And Jan, was this bird found in the wild or in captivity?
Jag gillar blommor, jag gillar träd, jag gillar naturen som den är!

Alcedo atthis

Jan ,

That one is a hybrid Aythya nyroca x Netta rufina , as you suspected.

There are some threads about this hybrid type at www.birdforum.net

and here is one from Southern Germany:

These are a bit variable and the one above has 2 siblings which both look a bit different from him (all 3 birds male, one looks quite close to your photo) . These hybrids were produced naturally at a nature reserve in southern germany where both species were fairly rare several years ago (in the meantime RC Pochard has established a small population there but Aythya nyroca is still very rare there).

Alcedo atthis

could be, but female hybrids are more difficult so I am not sure...
