voorbeelden:
Pirata hygrophilus = Piratula hygrophila
Pirata latitans = Piratula latitans
Pirata knorri = Piratula knorri
Pirata insularis = Piratula insularis

Is there any difference/ preference as to use Verzamelsoort spec. vs indet.?
When both exist, which should be kept?

Some people use spec. after genus, and indet. after higher taxa. As far as I know the "official" term would be sp. indet., in so far there are rules for these matters. Personally I prefer spec. everywhere, because that seems to be most well known and one term for all these entries saves in dupes (and people being able to find it because they know spec. but not indet.).

Arp, what's your reasoning on this?

To me, the usage of "spec." is a tad peculiar - I never ever see it used in scientifc publications. In those it is always "sp." But I can live with "spec.", as there is little cause for confusion in it. It's just that for the "spec." version I wouldn't know how to add subspecies (ssp.) or plural (spp.) where as the shorthands sp., ssp. and spp. are widely used and accepted/recognized.

As for the spec. vs. indet., when adding new species to the database I've been using indet. for taxa higher than species level (Genus sp.). I must have picked that up along the way somewhere but can't quite remember where. I'll try to find it when I'm back home (saturday) ...

Two entries here (spec. vs spec):

http://observation.org/soort/info/696048
http://observation.org/soort/info/195172

and this entry should in my opinion be deleted: Mushroom spec.
as we have this: Fungi indet.
or this: Fungi indet.
or this: Fungi spec.

Fishes:

This family is double: PEGASIDAE

with the latter containing some species, so the underlined entry should be deleted

Hi all,
I agree with Arp.
For scientific names of genera please use spec. With point, as it is the abbreviation of species. Example: Oriolus spec.
For higher taxa levels use indet., meaning 'not identified'. Example: Oriolidae indet., Aves indet.

In local names, in my opinion, spec. and indet. are to be avoided.
Rather they should contain an expression in the local language, in case of English: unknown is okay. Example Unknown oriole, Bird unknown, etc. In German 'unbest.' is okay (unbestimmt), Spanish  disconocido, etc.

Hi there!
First of all, I also like this way of handling it. So - shall I notify here in the forum whenever I come along a higher taxon with spec. instead of indet.?

Different topic:
http://observation.org/soort/view/2274 should be merged with --> http://observation.org/soort/view/105372

The latter entry being the right one at present (compare: fauna.naturkundemuseum-berlin.de/full_results.php?id=402406)

Another terminology - especially concerning plants - that I am uncertain of is the usage of agg. vs. s.l. (sensu lato). Is there any difference (I am not a botanist)?

If not so much, I would prefer the usage of agg.

Here are some entries I came across that should be changed or merged:

Change spec. -> indet.:

Thripidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/713853
Adiheterothripidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/713850
Heterothripidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/708341
Melanthripidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/713851
Merothripidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/707812
Uzelothripidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/713175
Blaberidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/714052
Ascalaphidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/713476
Acanthopidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/713262
Coccinellidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/156859
Praentomobryidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/712302
Protentomobryidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/712300
Acanthisittidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/643160
Acanthizidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/643190

Two entries; merge spec. with indet.:

Salticidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/680675 ; http://observation.org/soort/view/157382
Araneae: http://observation.org/soort/view/690644 ; http://observation.org/soort/view/19264
Entomobryidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/680636 ; http://observation.org/soort/view/27170
Tachinidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/685008 ; http://observation.org/soort/view/27276
Diptera: http://observation.org/soort/view/681456 ; http://observation.org/soort/view/10058

both entries wrong:
Serpentes: http://observation.org/soort/view/20327 ; http://observation.org/soort/view/687600
Micropezidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/19383 ; http://observation.org/soort/view/693944
Muscidae: http://observation.org/soort/view/18960 ; http://observation.org/soort/view/699253

This entry should be language-independent: Empididae en Hybotidae --> Empididae/Hybotidae
http://observation.org/soort/view/27274

to be continued...
