Such abberrations indeed usually are (epi?)genetic in origin (epigenetics are when the genes are the same, but they are expressed differently, which can be caused by all kinds of factors such as stress). Especially as the white spots on the butterfly you saw are at the same location on the wings as on the buttterfly at lepiforum.de, this must also be (epi)genetic.
