Possibly a Shoveler (Slobeend) X Gadwall (Krakeend)?

Having had a closer look, mainly at shape and colouration of the tail, undertail and primaries (no curls as in mallard), I think you may well be right, Jan! Overall greyness is also probably a pro gadwall feature. Slightly chestnut toned breast still reminds me more of mallard, but then again, female gadwall also have a slightly darker (brown) breast.

I agree with Jan,  Slobeend x Krakeend

Pale whitish throat and cheek is typical for this hybrid.
the rusty tones from the flanks of Shoveler seem to get shifted mainly to the breast (and often get darker) in some shoveler hybrid combinations (Shoveler x Gadwall, but also shoveler x Eurasian Wigeon, Shoveler x northern pintail).

Ok, thanks Jan and Jorn! I've refered the photographer to this topic.
