You're right, its jizz (mainly headshape) doesn't fit on Witoogeend/Ferriginous duck. The shape has something of Red-crested Pochard? Interesting duck.

I agree: shape of head and overall colour impression seems totally wrong for Aythya nyroca.

When you look at this bird, it looks a bit like a Wigeon as well in my opinion. I agree with Martijn en Frank that it is most ceirtanly not a "pure" Ferruginous. It is most definately a prdduct of a mixed marriage.

In my opinion the best explanation is female hybrid Krooneend x Witoogeend.
It fits with the few others i have seen descriptions or photos. but as I haven´t seen many, I thought its best to check with others opinions....

For Jorn: there was a female Red crested pochard on the same location and date present, rare here......

CiteerWhen I just looked to the shape of its head (combination of its bill, eyes...), my first thought was: hybrid with Fulvous Tree duck (Dendrocygna bicolor). But that would be very stunning, won't it? Maybe I'm a little dizzy
I also immediately thought of some kind of Dendrocygna, symilar head shape and a little elongated neck. I thought there was one present for sometime in the neighbourhood? (somewhere near Enschede)

I agrre the neck looks quite long... however coloration and all other features are good for a hybrid Aythya nyroca x Netta rufina.

and furthermore, it seems hybrids between the Dendrocygninae and other duck groups are unknown?
(only hybrids within genus Dendrocygna are known- at least as far as I know?)
