Hi all,

I am searching for any interesting pictures of hybrid waterfowl I can find as I am planning to create an Identification guide for hybrids. So I´d be happy about anybody helping me out with photos...

To show what I am intending to do I attach the colour plate of hybrids Mallard x Teal I created already (The scan is not perfect, sorry).

This is based on photos of 16 males (14 Common Teal x Mallard (8 from captivity, 6 from the wild); 2 Greenwinged Teal x Mallard from the wild ). As the 2 latter showed similar patterns to some of the former, I combined these hybrids in the drawing.

I find the high varaibility quite interesting; highest variability was in head pattern. Though the majority was similar to the upper 2 hybrids on the left side; there were quite some different looking birds.

Best Regards,

Jörn

This is a very interesting project!

Perhaps you'd like to know that I am (again) thinking about making a guide to the colour-varieties of half-domestic mallards in Dutch parks (soepeenden / parkeenden). What I have in mind is a .pdf-file that can be printed on any colour printer and then cut to fit in existing fieldguides (as some "extra pages"). I am a sponsor for this, lack of sponsoring is the resason that i keep delaying my project.

I can send you a photo of a captive hybrid barnacle x white fronted.

I think I have some Hybrid Geese pictures, you may use them for drawing the birds for your book.
It's a very good idea!

Hi Paul, Hi Jos,

Many Thanks!
I am very interested to see those photos, I have been trying to send you emails via this forum, but I am not sure if i did it right, as my Dutch is indeed less than basic.

Paul , I think your Idea is alos a very good and nessecary one as theree are so many beginners thrown by the variability of those mallards with domestic duck blood.
Charlie Moore made a start on this here, but certainly that is no pages for the field:

Hi Jörn,

How is your book doing at the moment?
Dit you receive some pictures of hybrid Geese I send you?
Those pictures are not that good, but perhaps you can use them.

However, take your time.
I'm very curious.

Hi Jörn,

Sorry I just read this topic for the first time!!!
Anyway, it seems to be a very interesting (and hard) job to make a guide like that.
Feel free to use the photos from my website and others I might have sent to you in the past.

Hi Jan,

now you know why I am so insistant on hybrid ID!

Thanks for your friendly offer!

As far as I remember now, I didn´t receive any mails with photos from you?
I remember I asked quite some time ago if you had bigger versions of the hybrids Falcated teal x Wood duck and the hybrid Shelduck x Aix. I do not know if this reached you at all?

Meanwhile I will be starting a new threa d on an amazing hybrid from vermont which we discussed at Birdforum.

Cheers, Jörn

Hi Jörn,

This is also the first time I see this topic. We once started this hybrid forum because we got so many pictures of hybrid geese and it was at the time hard to pinpoint a name to them. My idea was to gather as many pictures and knowledge as possible, and then put the hybrids in groups so we could try to identify the parents. When certain hybrids were clear we could make some identification pages about them. But if you would write a book about it, it would make things easier for all dutch birders! Especially since there are so many hybrid ducks and geese around here.

By the way, we discovered this hybrid in Zeeland last weekend. Is this also a Mallard x Teal? We thought it was a Hybrid between pintail x Teal.
