Looks very much like the Lychee shield bug Chyrsocoris stolli.
As far as I can see Chyrsocoris stolli is not yet in the Observado database, so I would like to request its addition but I can't seem to find any information regarding the author of this species.
Is it possible that the name has been changed?

Howdy,

As I'm not a specialist of exotic Scutelleridae I've just created Chrysocoris spec. for now and added a link to a PDF on the species info page:

Parveen, S.; Ramamurthy, V.V.; Ushmani, K.; Khokhar, S. (2013) Revision of the genus Chrysocoris Hahn (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae) from India. - The Bioscan, vol.8(1), pp.219-232. (PDF)

Where is your image from?

Random guess because of David's other forum topics: Sri Lanka?

Yes it is from Sri Lanka (Tissamaharana).
After reading parts of "Revision of the genus Chrysocoris Hahn (Hemiptera: Scutelleridae) from India", I am beginning to doubt if it is a C. stolli or even a Chyrsocoris sp. at all. The markings on the scutellum do not match any of the Chyrsocoris sp. reviewed in the paper. Nor can I find any mention of the red rings between the antenna segments (but maybe that is not a distictive feature). Images of C. stolli (as well as those of a few other C. sp.) that I could find on the internet strengthen my doubts.
I think I should be checking out the Callipahara genus as Arp suggested.

I attach the photo again together with another view and both with brightness enhanced for better detail.
Of course any id-suggestion is very much appreciated.

Hi David,

At the moment I'm somewhat overloaded with other stuff that I want to do, so I'm not going to spend a lot of time researching this right now. Suffice to say that there are a few genera that I have trouble distinguishing from photo (all pretty much look the same to me  ). Among these, I think at least Calliphara and Calidea have quite similar looking species, but there may well be more in genera such as Lampromicra or even Pachycoris.

I've also found a fairly similar looking (but not quite the same) "Philia miyakonus", but did not instantly find clear/reliable info on the status of the genus Philia (various contradicting author names etc), so I have not yet created a "spec." for that.

The paper by Lyal (1979) linked on the Calliphara spec. info page has some rudimentary info on historic naming and separation characters for some of the genera.

Maybe with these names you can find better info :)

If you come up with any names (spec. or species) that you wish to have added, just say the word ...

P.S. Please be aware that many, if not most, of the names with "these" critters on the internet are bound to be wrong ;)
