Possible trigen?
« Gepost op: juni 30, 2014, 19:12:43 pm »

Look at this, I see indications of 3 species being involved. What do others think?

Might be just Mallard X Eurasian Wigeon?

Well,
the head pattern can occur in mallard x wigeon, but in general then the green is often connected over the top like here. Additionally the legs are in general pale orange in this hybrid and there are no black centres  in the scapulars . additionally most of these hybrid mallard x wigeon have a darker breast and the bill in generla is blue , pinkish or greenish without a dark thin line along the middle of the upper mandible. here is another one to compare. or here a third.

I can not exclude that the 3rd bird species involved was mallard , not teal, but there are elements of wigeon in the wing as well as elements of pintail  (the dark centres) in the scapulars.  But it does not add up to two species in my opinion...

Trigens are rare in the wild , but are bred in captivity and are for sale : would you have guessed the parentage of the lower one here?
luckily it is not too common that such birds enter the gene pool of a wild species (at least not in europe)
For a trigen occurring in the wild  , but involving an escape : See here Mallard x (Chiloe wigeon x Bahama pintail). I am convinced that this is the correct ID here

male

female

and this is the likely  female escape hybrid parent of the two : Chiloe wigeon x Bahama pintail
