This has several markings which do not fit very well to Mallard x Pintail...

I think this is a trigen  involving a 3rd species....

maybe teal?

Some Reasons for these thoughts:

It is stated to be smaller than Mallard...

it has a light patch on the lores

the bill is mainly black

I have seen pictures of about 30mallard x Pintail hybrids alltogether, and have seen a few Mallard x Pintail also myself.

All of these were about mallard-sized, had no light spots on the lores and had most had a mainly bue bill with or without a thin black stripe on the culmen (some had a greenish yellow bill colour, with abit of blackon the culmen)

... so this bird here does not really fit into that pattern, allthough being superficially similar

I think we´ve also got a few pictures of something like this here on waarneming.nl. If I have time I try to find them.

Oh no it was something else:

it was this strange one.

But back to the duck you mentioned. I´m not so sure about the third species idea. First because i think the chance for this event is always very small even in captivity. Secondly, because i do see a bil that could fit on a pintail (grey sides are visible, as well as the black centerstripe), the only problems that i do see is the size and the bright spot on the lores. But couldn´t this be coincidence?

Oh, yours is a Pintail x Wood duck... that´s indeed a strange looking bird...Apart from this I have only once before seen that hybrid combination...

That was photos of a bird raised in an aviariy in the USA- that one did differ from this one here in the head pattern, showing a faint version of the upper white stripe of the Wood ducks head pattern, and heving the breast a bit ess rusty red.

sorry , will add the full name in future...
how do I do this so that it stays automatically at the bottom  in every post?

Some of the pictures on Jan´s really great hybrid website are actually from me...

However there are a few hybrids on his site where I think the original ID is probably wrong. I also sent hm a mail about this just recently, but didn´t receive his answer yet.

Well, the ID of some of these odd hybrid thingies can really drive you nuts...The first ones i ever encountered were on a birding trip  to Wangerooge in 1994 (Eider x Shelduck and a yet unidentified hybrid Anas thingy). Since then I got an interest in this topic...

Jörn,

To create or change your automatic autograph, go to "configuratiescherm" at the top of this forumscreen. Then click on "handtekening bewerken" in the menu on the left. Then you could put your text in the textbox on the right. You can change other things here as well. And sent pesonal messages or e-mails to persons.

good luck!
