Greetings Hisko,

I recently listed some sightings on Observado of Sambar (Cervus unicolor) in Australia, that were labelled as ESC by admins. This species was introduced here many decades ago and is now naturalised and breeds in the wild, in great numbers. The forum's FAQ on Exotic species, suggests that 'Escaped' species are those that escaped or were released from captivity, and cannot maintain populations in the wild without human aid.

In my case, was the Sambar labelled as ESC because it is also considered 'Rare', to avoid confusion with genuinely rare species? Or should all non-native species such as the very common European Blackbird (Turdus merula) and European Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) also be labelled as ESC in Australia?

Cheers,
Tamara
