Phoma macrostoma is a fungus that is being developed as a bioherbicide to control broadleaved weeds like dandelion, Canada thistle, and clover. The fungus naturally infects Canada thistle (far right photo), causing plants to turn white. Without chlorophyll, the plants die. When applied as a granule to soil before weed emergence, the fungus causes the emerging thistles to come up white (top left photo). The fungus has been isolated and purified from plants growing in Saskatchewan and other provinces by AAFC scientists (bottom left photo).

Leuke verwijzing. During the UK survey, diseased tissues and bleached, necrotic flower heads, in particular, were observed to produce an abundance of pycnidia after death" )

Phoma macrostoma is the causal agent of white tip disease in the UK and Canada. The disease is limited to the eastern and southern counties of England, from where it may have been introduced accidentally into Canada together with its host, most probably in animal fodder. The fungus is locally systemic in the shoots of C. arvense, but not in the extensive root system, thereby suggesting that shoots emerging in the spring may be systemically infected from overwintering inoculum in plant debris on the soil or on mummified plants. The isolates of P. macrostoma from white tip disease of C. arvense in Canada and the UK occupy a unique clade that is phylogenetically distinct, but morphologically indistinguishable from the type culture of P. macrostoma.

Ik ben de draad een beetje kwijt. Wat veroorzaakt nou die witte disteltoppen?

1) Puccinia punctiformis (Akkerdistelroest)
2) Pseudomonas syringae (bacterieziekte)
3) Phoma macrostoma (schimmel)
