Bericht door: Alcedo atthis op februari 23, 2007, 19:08:29 PM
Hi , I think the witoogeend from Groningen, Vinkhuizen in this gallery is a hybrid with something else.

I see some similarities to this one:

I am surprised it is labeled 'witoogeend' on avifauna groningen. It is commonly known as a hybrid, but I have never heard with what species. It looks like the other hybrid indeed, but the bill seems less pointed.

Oups,

the other one is indeed discuseed here, didn´t see that... I think the bill pattern and shape in both birds makes Carolinaeend (Aix sponsa) likely as one parent, but could the other parent be Witoogeend in both cases?

If I see the variabilty in some other duck hybrids,
I think maybe yes....but I am not sure...

and then there is a third hybrid on this site, which I also interpreted as a hybrid Witoogeend x Carolinaeend...

what do you think?

Concsidering variability of other duck hybrids ,see this for example : all Wilde Eend x Krakeend (The so called Brewer´s duck ,named by J.J.Audubon):
Hybrid variability is making ID sometimes really bloody hard...

I thought this might be an interesting addition...though it hasn´t directly to do with the original ducks in this thread...
