Titel: (Amerikaanse?) Zilvermeeuw Azoren
Bericht door: arthurgeilvoet op november 01, 2011, 21:03:33 PM
Beste allemaal,

Hi again Richard,

I finally had more time to have a critical look at your gull.

A distinct, long pale tongue on P10 does not appear in the photographs, immediately reducing the chances of reliable identification, unfortunately.
The all black outer edge to P10, not broken by the white mirror, looks interesting as this is often shown in many populations of smithsonianus (e.g. along the west coast), as is the thin black 'W' pattern on P5, but both are found in combination in a few adult European Herring Gulls too. I include two examples from Belgium, which are both quite similar to this Azorean bird.
In conclusion, I cannot really see anything wrong for American Herring Gull and it may well be one, but I am unable to say for sure.

  Regards,
  Peter
