From now on, anyone can add new species to Observation.org
Birds, mammals and plants are excluded from this system
You open the link and enter the genus or species name. After pressing ok an api to GBIF is called
If the retrieval is successful, the species will be added immediately. If the species cannot be found in GBIF or the family is not listed in Observation.org, you can still request the species here.
This is https://old.observation.org/add_species.php the link to add species. Use it wisely.
The Gbif api : for example for Leucauge grata: test https://api.gbif.org/v1/species/search?q=Leucauge%20grata
We only use the 'best' result , for matching the cannonical name is used
If the GBIF api did not work out:
Post an entry in this topic
Your request should contain with at least the following data:
1. Species group as known in Observation.org
2. Scientific name
3. Author and year (use the correct punctuation marks)
4. Family name as known in Observation.org
5. Source of this information (taxonomic website)
It is optional to add names for the species in e.g. Dutch or English.
For example :
Other Arthropods (Arthropoda)
Bourletiella hortensis
(Fitch, 1863)
Bourletiellidae
If the taxonomic family of the species is not known in Observation.org include a link to a taxonomic tree of the new species.
* For birds we use the taxonomy as found on IOC worldbirdlist http://www.worldbirdnames.org/ (Birds are up-to-date and every 6 months updated by Maarten Hotting and Erik van Dijk according new IOC updates. In theory only errors occur.)
* For plants we use https://powo.science.kew.org/ as a reference
* For mammals, reptiles and amfibians we use http://www.iucnredlist.org/ as a reference
* For Fish we use http://www.fishbase.de/ as a reference
* For other marine species we use http://www.marinespecies.org as a reference

Missing Ophrys x castroviejoi (Ophrys de Castroviejo in French)
Family : Orchidaceae
Genus : Ophrys
See in INPN : https://inpn.mnhn.fr/espece/cd_nom/717343
Photos of this hybrid on this website : https://www.elisajeanluc.fr/orchidees_nature/ophrys/ophrys_speculum.htm
Name is unplaced in POWO (https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77124707-1) but I can't see why, there is multiple photos of this hybrid available on the web and there is some known plants known in Spain or in France (for exemple at Leucate)
(As a side note, POWO's taxonomy is very bad for at least the genus Ophrys and used neither by academics, nor field guides, nor naturalists, nor legislative texts, there it shouldn't be taken as a reliable source on any database. Some examples : Some rare, endemic or protected taxa are merged with widespread species e.g. O. santonica is merged with O. scolopax ; Invaluable data are lost e.g. as O. dinarica is merged with O. fuciflora it becomes impossible to distinguish the observations of the two taxa ; Some species are true first generation hybrid e.g. O. × nouletii is a fist generation hybrid between O. aranifera and O. scolopax. Some however such as O. arachnitiformis are only species of hybridogenic origin (they reproduce by themselves, can exist in pure population, and cannot be created by any crossing between extant species). Hence these species should not be considered as hybrids.)
Is it possible to add this species in the database ?
Thank you in advance !

Crambidae
