What if you already know your Holiday destination, know which species to expect, but have no exact locations of the species?
This new observado.org feature will help!
In short (you can find the step-by-step tutorial in the posts below):
go to http://observado.org
search the distribution map of the species of your interest (=search species name, and click on "maps" in "about this species" menu).
zoom in to the area you like to visit and click on one of the dots on the map
This will bring you to all the observations of this species within your chosen grid (= from 10 - 1 km2).
Step-by step description looks long, but it's quite extensively written, so just please have a try!
And now step-by-step (make sure you are logged in):
1. Find the country you like to visit. Let's say we want to visit Spain
1a. Menu "Geography" > submenu "Europe by country"
(you could also start with point 4, without chosing a country first, but your grid size will be larger then)
2. A new window will open,
http://observado.org/countries_eur.php
2a. Click on Spain on the map, this will bring you to the special country pages of Spain within observado
3. Country pages of Spain
http://spain.observado.org/index.php
Now let's say we want to know where we can find Dupont's Lark near the place of Zaragoza?
How do we do this?
4. Search the species of your interest. There are different ways to do this in observado.
4a. For now we use the quick search box (top right of your screen, see attached picture)
4b. type "Dupont" in the box (make sure your language is put to english)
5. A new screen will open, click on the Dupont's Lark
http://spain.observado.org/search.php?q=dupont&x=-1321&y=-48
5a. clicking on "Dupont's Lark" will bring you to a screen with all the Dupont's Lark sightings of Spain.
6. All the observations of Dupont's Lark in Spain are nice, but is not what we are looking for. We only want to know where we can find observations around Zaragoza.
7. So let's find observations around Zaragoza.
7a. Go the "about this species" menu on the right of your screen
7b. Select "maps"
8. The map shows all the observations of Dupont's Lark in Spain
8a. Still not what we are looking for, so let's zoom in on the Zaragoza area
8b. The grid size near Zaragoza is quite large, so let's change the grid size to 1 km2
8c. You could change the date "from" and "to" when you are interested in a longer period or if there are not many sightings.
It is quite precise, but not enough. We want an exact location, we want GPS coordinates!!
9. Get more details by clicking on a dot on the map
9a. A pop-up screen will open, with the text "observations"
9b. If you click on this "observations" --> Magic!
10. Because all the observations within your grid choice ( in this case we chose 1 km2 grid) are shown. You can now click on every single observation and get all the exact details!
including maps, specification on the accuracy of the sighting, number of individuals, pictures, sounds etc etc.
hm.
http://spain.observado.org/soort/maps/150433?from=1012-03-06&to=2013-03-06&count_ex=0&grid=1000&kwart=0
